Question about wireless service for my new iPad 4

I just received my new iPad 4 a couple of days ago and I was wondering about either wireless service for it, prepaid wireless service for it or whatelse I can do.  I would like to be able to use it outside of my residence, since I have a lot of doctors appointments and would like to use this for directions.  Can anyone give me any advice?  Thanks!  Smiley Happy
