Bad splitter?

I have one phone jack in my house and am trying to get DSL and my phone up and running at the same time.  It doesn't seem to be working.

If I plug the phone line into the jack, it works fine.  If I plug the modem line into the jack, it works fine.  If I plug the splitter (that Verizon provided in my installation package) into the jack and put the lines for the modem and phone (with filter), neither works.  I have called Verizon numerous times and nobody seems to be able to get me to the right person for answer.  Yesterday, I thought I was close and was "disconnected" after a 42 minute wait.

Do you think it could be as simple as a bad splitter?

HELP!  If I am paying for a phone line, I want to be able to use it.

Thanks

Andrea

Hi Andera, it sure sounds like a bad splitter. If you plug in the splitter and test either jack individually this will absolutely tell you it is bad. If you run into issues down the road try to convince verizon to run a direct line from the Network Interface Device to your modem.  This will eliminate the need for splitters, and phone filters. It was done for me when I had slow connection issues for no charge.

Hi Jose,

Thanks for answering.  I thought maybe it was a bad splitter, so I bought a new one.  It didn't work either.  When I FINALLY got through to someone at Verizon, their solution was for me to add a jack in the house (for $95) or schedule a tech to come out to take a look at it (for $54 for the first 1/2 hour) since it is inside the house.

Any other ideas?

OUCH that is a lot of money for a relatively simple job. I am really surprised that the splitter does not work so I guess it is the wall jack and or wiring. Do you have a differnet  jack you can test with or do you know anyone that is handy and can take the existing jack apart and verify that the wiring is good? You could also try a different phone filter.
