High Speed Internet (DSL) and Dial-Up

I recently got verizon's 1.1 - 3mbps speed. its way too slow for my needs. I do gaming on XBOX LIVE, and streaming netflix with downloading here and there. Why can't verizon provide the same speed that AT&T can? AT&T gives 6mbps DSL. Whats up with this?
