False advertising

Lately I have experienced down times of hours to days with my internet connection. The technical person visited my house a couple times to look at the problem. Finally he advised me to call the business office and lower my DSL speed to 1.5 Mbps.

The business office pointed out that the different speed tiers are no longer supported. Only two are supported: fast and slow. The definition of fast, ACCORDING TO THE VERIZON.COM WEBSITE, is automatically adjusted from 1.1 Mbps to 3.0 Mbps to achieve the best connection. But it doesn't really work that way. It's all or none.

Verizon decided to eliminate the tailoring of speeds for each subscriber. However they put no actual service in place to automatically perform what they used to do "manually", which was programming the control equipment via computer, but still had to be done by a person. So it is basically false advertising to say the service varies from 1.1 to 3 Mbps automatically. In my case I usually get over 1 Mbps, except I get 0.0 Mbps during the erratic outages.

#1 Visit http://www.giganews.com/line_info.html and post up the Traceroute the page shows, if you wish. Be aware that the final hop (bottom-most line of the trace) might contain a hop with your IP address in it. Remove that line. What I'm looking for is a line that mentions "ERX" in it's name towards the end. If for some reason the trace does not complete (two lines full of Stars), keep the trace route intact.

#2 Can you provide the Transceiver Statistics from your modem?

#3 If you don't how to get that info from the modem:

a) It would help tp know the brand and model of your modem.

b) If a RJ-45 WAN port router that is connected to the dsl modem, what is the brand and model of the DSL modem?

Would you happen to know if you come directly from the Central Office (basically, how far away from you from Verizon's office?) or if you are coming out of a remote? The ERX is in concern with some equipment that is in use which normally causes speed issues unless the right configuration is applied. I can't comment too much on the 0Mbps deal unless we find out what is happening during that time, but if your speeds are averaging around 1.5-2Mbps at all times of the day and night then we'll get that dealt with.

Also, your line looks like it will hold 5Mbps without too much issue, despite the fact that it is a long run of copper for DSL. The package you're in could qualify you for anything from 1.1 to 15Mbps, so the rep who told you about "Fast" and "Slow" packages is correct. That's their new system of doing things which I'm sort of glad they moved to, but it isn't being executed as well as I'd like them to.
