Verizon sent me a Westell 6100 G modem as a replacement for the older Westell A90 Wirespeed modem. I did not receive any installation manuals or CD's. After I connected the DSL phone line, Ethernet Data cable & the 12V dc power line, the modem started heating up rapidly & smoking, so I quickly disconnected everything to avoid a fire. Did this result from a defective modem or a connection problem? I am concerned about using another 6100 G replacement unit since there would have been a fire if I had left the computer unattended.

Either wrong power adapter supplied or the mdoem was severely defective. Not normal for the 6100Gs to just smoke up like that. I know the 6100Gs do require a different power adapter over the older 6100s and older modems, so it is worth pointing out.
A friend of mine has a Westell 6100G in use right now without an issue. They work fine, just supply them with proper ventilation. Let Verizon know about the first 6100G and exchange modems with them.
