after you get a new modem, what do you need to do to activate it? do you need to call technical support so that they can configure it while the modem is turned on ?

Nope, no need to give tech support a call. When you receive the modem, you can plug it in like you normally would, and from there, you can either run the activatemydsl.verizon.net wizard, or if you know your way around the modem you can disable the Walled Garden and then input your PPPoE information via the modem's Admin Interface (http://192.168.1.1/).
On Verizon's modems, if a Westell you can disable the walled garden at http://192.168.1.1/verizon/redirect.htm , and if an ActionTec can be shut off at http://192.168.1.1/verzon/redirect
