Modem/Router Model - Actiontec GT704WG

During the last few weeks the internet connection will drop out (No internet light and DSL light blinks) for about 45 seconds.  After this time period it reconnects.  The modem is connected to a desk top computer and wireless lap top.  It normally takes place when both computers are utilizing the internet.  It rarely drops out when only one computer is accessing the net.

Any ideas to a possible solution to this problem?

#1 Check the IP Address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, and DNS Server(s) on your computer.

This means for example, if you are on Windows XP...

a) Go to Start -> Run.

b) Type in cmd and press enter,

c) In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and press enter.

#2 Go to the Default Gateway and log-in, as need be.

Note the Default User name is admin and the default password is password

#3 In the router go to Status ->DSL Status.

#4 Please post the info that is there.

#5 In the router go to Utilities ->System Log

#6 Please post the info that is there, but not:

a)  Any MAC Address(es).

b) Your PPPoE User name if the router is handling PPPoE.

c)  Any Public IP(s).

These three ranges of IP Address(es) are not public, so if you want to - you may show post these from the logs.

a) 10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255

b) 172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255

c) 192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

#7 Did this start happening after you got the second computer?

OR did this start happening after you started using both computers at the same behind this modem combo?

We have only recently began having issues.  Both had work fine with this combo for months.

I'm a little unsure what can be posted from the system log, but there are many posts that say:

Elapsed Time syslog: All DNS servers tried, no response.

Ok.

#1 Go to http://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm

#2 Download the program.

#3 After scanning it for malware, if desired..

a) Make sure no other network aware programs are running.

b) In that program go to NameServers and press Run Bench Mark.

#4 Please report back if there are any faster public DNS Servers on the net, then your system DNS Server(s).

#5 What is your OS and Version? For example I am on ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

If I am reading this correct, there is one listed that is faster than mine.  The list is sorted by Fastest First.

the name of it is dns.wdcl.speakeasy.net

The desktop is windows XP and the laptop is windows 7.

Ok.

#1 In the router go to Advanced Setup -> DHCP

#2 Put a check in the box that say I would like to adjust the DHCP Server Settings

#3 Click the first Apply Button as need be.

#4 Where it says DNS if that not setup for Static, select Static and skip my next step (number 5)

#5 Record down the DNS Servers are listed in there.

#6 Enter in the top two DNS Servers into the field provided.

#7 Click Apply.

#8 Release and renew the IP Address(es) on your computer, as need be.

-

a) On Windows XP..

#1 Go to Start -> Run.

#2 Type in cmd and press enter.

#3 In the new window, called the command prompt, type in ipconfig /release and press enter.

#4 Then without closing that same windowm, type in ipconfig / renew and press enter.

On Windows Vista or Windows 7...

#1 Go to the start menu and type command in the box. Then right-click on Command Prompt and click Run as administrator. If a User Account Control window pops up, click Continue.

#2 In the new window, type in ipconfig /release and press enter.

#3 Then without closing that same windowm, type in ipconfig / renew and press enter.

If you are still having issues after doing this..

#1 What is the other DNS Server that is faster then yours. according to that tool?

#2 In the router go to Status -> Gernal Status

#3 What Firmware are you on?

#4 Do you have your own RJ-45 WAN port router, around the house?

By a RJ-45 WAN port router: For example the Linksys WRT54G.

By around the house: I don't even care if it is not connected to your Actiontec GT704WG.

#5 Do you the location of the NID, around your house?
