hey all,
I am a verizon customer since 06. About a week ago I had to reset my modem.. Now I cannot connect to www.pnc.com or www.nytimes.com . All my other usual sites are available. This has taken hours of my time. If I use a proxy I can connect. What's up with that?

To start with..
#1 What is the brand and model of your modem?
#2 What is the brand and model of your router (if you have one)?
#3 What software firewall do you have on your computer?
#4 Do a trace route to that site (or sites) that you can not connect to.
a) This means if on Windows XP.. Go to Start -> Run. Type in cmd and press enter.
b) Type in tracert www.pnc.com > tracert.txt and press enter.
c) Post the results here of what is in the tracert.txt file of where ever you typed that tracert command.

Your IP address is probably 'black listed' by the two sites you cannot connect too. That probably means at some point in the past (when the IP was unassigned), it was used in some sort of hacking attempt on the two sites (and probably others). You will have to contact the technical contact (generally available via whois) to get your IP address unblocked at those two sites, or wait until Verizon assigns that IP address to someone else (which could be a long time).
The reason the proxy connects, is the two sites see the proxy Ip address, not your ip address, and the proxy's ip address is not blocked.

you may also want to check your hosts file to make sure something has not added a redirect to 127.0.0.1 or some other site. In windows XP, HOSTS can be found in:
windows\system32\drivers\etc
It can be used to block sites or redirect to sites other then what your DNS tells your computer.
it is just a text file, you can open it with any text editor to look or edit.

You might try changing your DNS servers to something different? I've heard suggested that OpenDNS is a good way to go, but haven't tried it personally. I have occasionally set 4.2.2.1 or 4.2.2.2 as my alternate DNS server when I'm having trouble. If you need assistance in how to change these settings let me know. (Tech support *should* be able to walk you through it, but I certainly can't make any promises.)

Has anyone had any luck with any of these suggestions? I use Earthlink ISP and they use Verizon, so I can't get on to PNC and Southwest Airlines and I'm sure there is more. It seems like tech support doesn't know what to do but I hope they find out soon because PNC and Earthline will be history. I'm getting fed up. I'm not sure what to do with the suggestions listed here. Kind of afraid I may mess something else up. So far my email is working fine and can get on to most other sites I use. Maybe I'll just stop paying my bills, hummm....

I've been having the same problem with no success. It happens on my desktop, hardwired to the router/modem and with my notebook via wi-fi. So, I tend to think the problem is most likely not on my side. The only possibility on my side would be something with the router, and I can't find any setting that seems to relate.
Can anyone using verizon get on pnc.com?
By the way, I CAN get on www.nytimes.com.
