FIOS TV thru PC TV Tuner Card

Hi, i have a PC tv tuner card on my pc and have it connected to the coax cable. I do get a few channels thru windows media center, but only a few major networks. I understand encrypted content like hbo may not be available, but i would like to be able to watch CNBC, other news, and golf channel (i work from home and want to see the financial news, but need a break with golf!).

HAs anyone been able to do this without a new cable box and card? Is the channel selection really that limited without a card?

Thanks

Mike

Re: FIOS TV thru PC TV Tuner Card

All but local channels are in encrypted format. Yes the available channels in the clear are limited to those channels that are considered broadcast channels and are required by the FCC to be made available in the clear.

The other channels are required by the content providers to be provided in encrypted format. Otherwise no one would pay for them.

There is a PC tuner card now available from Ceton, that will accept a cable card rented from Verizon for $3.99 and it has 4 tuners. It is rather pricey. So if you go look, and can finde one is stock, be prepaired for sticker shock. $399. http://www.cetoncorp.com/buy.php

I was only able to pick up a few channels. I would assume those considered broadcast channels are the ones I can receive via an OTA atennea. I don't even get half of those, and as far as having the other stations encrypted, so people have to pay for them, that is why they have commercials, we don't pay, the sponsers do. Seems if they had a broader reach, they could get more revenue having them available. IMHO, i think this is more of a Verizon "you have to pay to use our box" scenario. Just like bringing a digital signal into your living room, downgrading the signal to analog, then saying you have to pay to use our box to get the signal back to the level it was when it is originally installed. $$$

Re: FIOS TV thru PC TV Tuner Card

I currently have one HD Verizon box and 1 std Verizon box along with the HD programming level. If i replace the std. box with a PC/TV Tuner/Verizon Cable card (and Win Media Center) will I be able to receive HD programs without adding more services from Verizon? or do I have to buy more HD programming.
