Surround Sound System Hook Up

I'm not sure that this is the correct forum for this, but I need some help setting up a system for my Mom and Dad.  They just purchased a Vizio LED HDTV and a Vizio Blue Ray Player.  We have these components hooked up with their Verizon Fios box, and everything is working fine.  The problem comes in when we try to hook up their surround system.  It will not work.  We have an HDMI cable from the Blue Ray player to the TV, and a cable from the Verizon Fios box to the TV, I believe.  I'm not there right now, so I'm not exactly sure.  We have a digital cable hooked up somewhere in there as well.  Anyway, based on the components that they have, can anyone tell us how to hook up all these components so they work properly?  They really want the surround sound system working because they don't have a lot of base on the TV, and the tinny sound is giving them a headache.  I can't seem to find where to adjust the base/treble on the TV, so, the surround sound, with its subwoofer, is the way to go.  Their system was working fine previously, before they bought the new TV, but they had an old regular TV, a DVD/VCR combo unit, their Fios box, and their surround sound system all hooked up.  I believe that their surround system is a Sony, and it does not have an HDMI cable hook up.

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Surround Sound System Hook Up

Sherrie, this should be fairly easy to solve. There are a number of different ways to go, but here's what I think would be easiest.

Check their television for an audio output connector. All the sounds that the TV can make are passed through this connection. If you have an optical or digital output connector, that would be the best to use because you should get the multi-channel signal that way. If not, you may have to use pairs of RCA cables (the little red and white circular connectors) to go between the TV and the sound system.

With this approach, you can mute the TV's sound and just use the separate sound system. You won't need to change inputs on the surround sound system when you switch between your FiOS box and the Blu-ray player, which is why I think this may be the easiest solution.

Let us know if you have any other questions, and we'll do our best to help.
