I have a linksys WRT54G Linksys WLAN router v 1.1. I understand there is free-ware versions that will give the router increased feature/functionality. I really need to add a guest WLAN capability. I played with DD-WRT in the past and cannot seem to get DD-WRT to load into this router.
Anyone know of other software to load on this router that could give me guest WLAN capabilities?
Thanks, Jim

#1 Maybe you are doing something wrong when trying to install DD-WRT, what ever that may be..
a) Not using a wired connection.
b) Not turning off your software firewall.
#2 Have you thought of using a Live CD of Unix/Linux, to instal DD-WRT? That is what I did on my Linksys WRT54G v2 something (2.0. 2.2)...
#3 Since you are having issues installing DD-WRT, onto this router: What makes you think you will not have issues installing other third party firmware, onto this router ?
#4 Have you thought about getting a router pre-loaded with third party firmware ?
Thanks.

I use the Verizon router for guest access, and my nice wireless access point is for Private secure access, behind my second router. The printer sits on the Verizon LAN so both my private and guest LAN can use it. Since Verizon likes to be in control of the STBs and DVRs I like to keep my stuff seperate. Two LAN IPs on the Actiontec, one to my router and one to the shared printer, and six MOCA IPs on the Actiontec, plus what ever wireless guest pick up.
I know this is off topic but achieves the same thing. Unless you want to have guest connected to your PCs. I don't like that.

DSLR, I re-flashed the original linksys software and after a few reboots finally took.
I was able to install DD-WRT but don't see an option for guest logon (captive portal).
My want is to use the Actiontec router as my primary router (WPA-PSK) for my own stuff then have my WRT router provide guest access via a captive portal.

Mark, on your Verizon router, are you using WPA PSK or what do you use for Guest access security?

Guest is WPA PSK with a secure phrase that is not so hard to remember. That way I can just give them the phrase. I do not leave the guest wide open.
Now on my inside access point I use a nice WPA2 Mixed PSK 63 character code. Mixed for compatibility. I like to generate from here. And if the wireless user can't type it in, they are not secure enough to be on my inside. The first time I used the key on my iPhone I had my 16 year old daughter type it in. My eyes are not that good, and I told her if she could put it into here phone, she could use it. But the after thought make me put her on the outer wall(Guest).![]()
I found this key generator and it keeps me from having to come up with one of my own.

For the captive portal piece looks like dd-wrt has a hotspot service but requires an external server. I'm trying to find something that includes the captive portal with local user database so I don't have to keep a PC running. Most times I would require this is during the late afternoons or weekends when I do NOT sit in my office and my desktop PC is off.

I think I hosed it. I tried to upgrade it and it failed and then I lost connection. I tried to reset it with the button but that doesnt work either. The linksys will pass traffic and I can ping it but when I try to connect to it, it fails. .Oh well.
Thanks everyone!!!! Maybe look on ebay for a cheap wireless router that supports captive portal
