April Showers Bring a Greener Fleet…and the President!

Clean Fleet EventIt may have been overcast and dreary in Landover, Maryland, last Friday but the future looks bright thanks in part to the dedicated group who gathered to hear President Obama’s inspiring discussion about clean vehicles.

As the president highlighted, transportation accounts for more than 70 percent of America’s oil consumption.  It is also one of the biggest costs for many businesses and families.  To reduce our costs and our dependence on oil, a National Clean Fleets Partnership is being launched.  As Verizon’s CSO, I’m excited that we are a founding member of that partnership.  And, as a father of five, I’m thrilled at the prospect of cleaner vehicles for future generations.

During Friday’s event, Mr. Obama toured several green vehicles, including three from the Verizon fleet.  He remarked on being proud of what our company is doing with a very special appreciation for the hybrids and all-electric vehicles manufactured in the United States of America.

Verizon runs the third largest private fleet of vehicles in the U.S. and we are committed to continuing to expand our use of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs).  In 2010, we added more than 1,600 new AFVs and by 2015 15% of our fleet will be powered by alternative fuels.

But Friday’s event was about even more than greening our fleet…it was about innovating the way we do business to focus on a brighter future for all of us.
