Connected Home: The Technology of Home Energy Management

by Employee ‎01-11-2011 08:28 PM - edited ‎01-12-2011 10:50 AM

Monitoring our home energy consumption is about to get a lot easier and a lot greener!

Last week’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES) was the perfect place for Verizon to share more details about the new Connected Home solution.

This ‘smart’ service also packs a hefty ‘green’ punch.  Lighting, thermostats and appliances can all be controlled and monitored by using a smartphone, computer or through FiOS TV.

But how does this “remote control for the home” work?

It’s simple. Using equipment such as a smart thermostat and a Home Control gateway people will be able can monitor their electricity usage as well receive energy efficiency tips from the  Home Control portal.

The service is customizable and equipment requirements will vary based on individual requirements.

Consumers will be able to proactively and reactively manage their electricity usage through various smart devices.  For example, if desired a consumer could use their FiOS TV to program their thermostat to different settings for morning, day and night.  The consumer can also use their smartphone to make an immediate change given a day’s unique situation.

Great idea! I understand that this is being piloted in NJ, but if you're expanding into NY I'd like to volunteer.  I'm already part of the NY State Jumpstart energy monitoring program but these seems to have alot more capabilities.

David, glad to hear your enthusiasm about the Connected Home plans. For now, the pilot only includes employees in NJ, but we’ll continue provide updates on the program at the “At Home” & “Responsibility” blogs so stay tuned. Thanks again!

I saw the exhibit at CES and am excited to see this take off in 2011.  I work with the NEA Verizon Wireless vertical account team, developing construction accounts, and there is a big ask from developers to incorporate smart technology in their commercial buildings.

There are also 3rd party solutions like Mapjects.com in smartgrid for building level, security, energy management and operations oversight. Mapjects clients interface with Zigbee, ZWave, Homeplug, LONWORKS, (and SCADA RTU's) SE 1.0 and 2.0 profiles.

Being that their portal services have been free, and include campaign management, it seems like an attractive alternative for people who want to be independent of utilities or service providers.

Environment and Sustainability centric!
