Connecting Arizona Communities During the Wallow Fire

by Employee Emeritus ‎08-09-2011 02:07 PM - edited ‎08-09-2011 02:07 PM

Firefighters and residents in Arizona relied on the Verizon Wireless network to stay connected during the state’s largest wildfire – the Wallow Fire.  The devastating Wallow Fire consumed 540,000 acres and displaced approximately 10,000 individuals, many of whom relied on Red Cross services and shelter operations until they could return home.

During the fire, Verizon Wireless Crisis Response Team deployed more than 100 wireless phones, modems and Mobile Hot Spots to provide additional communications support for relief organizations. The network team also deployed mobile cell sites and boosted capacity to ensure reliable network coverage.

In addition, the Verizon Foundation has awarded a $20,000 grant to the American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter to support “Fire Hurts – Red Cross Helps,” which was recently launched to support efforts to assist victims of home fires, apartment fires and wildfires.
