I've blogged in this space before about a terrific piece of journalism undertaken by PBS' FRONTLINE program. For the past year the FRONTLINE producers have been collecting and studying stories of a digital nation.
They have gone out and explored the online world. They've gone into households and asked parents, grandparents, young adults and children how they are using technology to establish a culture for a safe environment online.
They've looked at how all of our connectivity affects the major issues facing us today: health care, education, waging war, our relationships and even virtual reality.
The Verizon Foundation sponsored this program because our broadband networks play such a large role in delivering this technology, but also because we can see the larger picture. Beyond this hour and one-half program - which will air Feb. 2 at 9 p.m. - we will be able to take from their year long experiment the pieces that relate to education and start a dialog with folks in the community and in the schools to explore these issues in a more fulsome way.
Parents, students and teachers will be able to watch featured videos from Digital Nation; participate in online quizzes and polls to reflect on digital life; rate their agreement or disagreement with controversial issues; read more about "digital natives" from our parenting and educational experts; and comment on the ideas explored in this program.
This to me is the most exciting part of our relationship with PBS. Having them as our newest partner is a great complement to the work we already are doing with our Thinkfinity signature program. I hope you will take advantage of all this partnership has to offer and give us feedback so we'll know more about our readers' lives on the virtual frontier.
