Domestic Violence: A Personal Math Equation for Verizon

by Employee ‎10-01-2010 04:18 PM - edited ‎10-01-2010 06:39 PM

Telling Amys StoryOur nation’s epidemic of domestic violence, and Verizon’s response to it, made me think of those math equations my son is studying in 5th grade.

Problem A. Solve for X.   1 in 4 women is abused every 30 seconds. Verizon has a little more than 82K female employees. X equals the number of women in Verizon who are potential victims of domestic violence.

Problem B. Solve for Y.  1 in 5 employed adults are victims of domestic violence. Verizon has approximately 205K employees. How many Verizon employees are potential victims of domestic violence?

Solving for X and Y spurred Verizon to get involved with the issue of domestic violence prevention more than 10 years ago. It was personal. And, we’ve recently elevated our involvement by telling the nation of the tragic death of one of our employees, Amy Homan McGee. Amy was murdered in 2001 by her estranged husband within yards of her parents and children. It was horrific.

The documentary, Telling Amy’s Story, was produced by Penn State Public Broadcasting with funding from the Verizon Foundation. It is airing on local Public Television Stations across the nation during the month of October, which is National Domestic Violence Prevention Month. Check your local listings for the viewing and if you don’t see it, call your local PBS station and ask them to air it.  Get involved and make a difference. Given the domestic violence statistics, it’s probably just as personal for you as it is for Verizon.

By the way: X is 20,500 and Y is 41,000.
