Don’t be a Grinch – Give the Gift of Reading

by Employee ‎12-15-2009 10:04 AM - edited ‎12-17-2009 03:40 PM

Every year, new and gently used children's books make their way to schools and nonprofit organizations throughout the county. This is important, because for children exposure to age-appropriate books builds fundamental reading skills essential to learning.

Since 2001, needy children throughout the country have received more than 2 million books thanks to the generosity of Verizon employees, who each year take part in our Season's Readings campaign.

This year, we're inviting everyone (you too) to take part in the campaign.

It's easy! Log on to http://www.firstbook.org/verizon and make a donation to First Book. First Book is a nonprofit organization that provides new books to children in need by distributing the books through local schools, libraries and nonprofit children's organizations throughout the country.

$2 buys a new book. Imagine: Such a small contribution can change a child's life.

And thanks to our generous friends at Random House Children's Books, for every donation to First Book through the Web site, Random House Children's Books will make a matching donation of new, free books to First Book (up to 300,000 books).

Also, the first 300 people who make a $20 donation or more through the Web site will receive a complimentary copy of Dr. Seuss's beloved classic "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!"

Many of us probably have a fond childhood memory of a favorite book or story. Whether sitting on your parent's lap listening to "Twas the Night Before Christmas" or quietly paging through "The Cat in the Hat," books provide a window to adventure and wonder while also developing a skill essential to success in life.

Together we can help bring the joy of reading to thousands of children and give the gift of literacy, which ensures a brighter future.
