How Wireless Tech Can Improve Lives

by Employee ‎05-18-2012 12:44 PM - edited ‎05-18-2012 12:45 PM

One value we share at Verizon is the strong belief that our technology can improve lives. So it's nice to see that belief backed up by a new study on how wireless tech is helping people.

Socioeconomic Impacts of Wireless Technology, issued by BSR and the industry trade group CTIA, takes a clear-eyed view of the opportunities and challenges associated with how wireless technology can improve fields such as health care, finance, education and community empowerment.

I found the health care section in particular to be compelling. There are some great examples of products with wireless technology baked in that help people with chronic diseases better manage their daily routines.

The study goes on to outline the hurdles to the widespread adoption of mHealth tech: Devices are still too complex, there are too many new products and applications entering the field, and medical professionals still need to figure out how to best integrate these tools into their day-to-day practices.

But we're working to help on these issues. Verizon Foundation is helping fund projects to find the best way to apply our technology. This Responsible Business TV segment that aired last night on CNBC shows one example — how we helped the University of Virginia develop a telemedicine program that provides global health care services in the developing world.

There will be plenty more to follow. As Kathy Brown says in the video, "This is just the tip of the iceberg."
