Gifts, galas and gladness – all great parts of the holiday season. And no matter who you are or where you are it’s likely you will be celebrating this season. So why not add another word to the holiday list? Green!
There are many ways to make sure you are not a Green Grinch this holiday season. So have some fun and go green with these ideas:
Green Gifts: From the present itself to the wrapping, gift giving is a great opportunity to be eco-friendly. Green gifts have little to no packaging, a long useful life and a limited impact on the environment. Someone on your list in need of a new phone? Consider a green smart phone, such as the Motorola Citrus, which is made from 25 percent post-consumer recycled plastic, packaged with eco-friendly materials and certified and certified Carbon Free® through an alliance with Carbonfund.org.
Locally-made gifts are a great choice when possible and creative, recycled wrapping can be unique, fun replacement for traditional wrapping paper. Try a scarf for gift-wrap or even a festive towel with ribbon. Your recipient will be thrilled by the ‘double gift’.
Green Gatherings: Whether you are hosting a large event or stopping by a friend’s house, you can ‘party green’ by using reusable flatware and dishes instead of plastic-ware (it elevates your party too!). Use environmentally-friendly lights to set the stage and clearly marked recycling containers for clean-up.
Green Cooking: For most of us, the holidays mean more cooking which could increase water usage. Make sure you are not running your faucet continuously while preparing food or washing dishes. Locally-grown vegetables are another way to reduce your “cookprint” (cooking footprint). Reduce the number of times you open your refrigerator – it is the single largest energy hog in the kitchen!
While none of us can do everything, ALL of us can do something! So throughout the holidays, look for ways to not only enjoy your loved ones but share a little love with the earth – don’t be a Grinch! Be Green this Holiday Season.
