New Tools for Seniors Coping with Diabetes, Vision Loss

by Employee ‎11-13-2009 10:40 AM - edited ‎11-13-2009 11:42 AM

Is someone in your family coping with vision loss, or Diabetes, or both? Currently more than 3 million Americans are, and now there's a new free online resource that can help.

On Thursday, the American Foundation for the Blind unveiled its updated AFB Senior Site, including a comprehensive Diabetes guide which includes a host of free materials to help senior citizens stay active, eat sensibly and independently manage medications.

The Diabetes guide is the latest edition to the AFB Senior Site, which also contains valuable tools safb_logo-registration-mark2.JPGuch as:

  • Tips on simple changes for the home that make it easier for someone with low vision to navigate, such as using contrasting colors on light switch plates, or using different textures on different surfaces.

  • A nationwide database of services for seniors with low vision, such as where to find large print or audio books.

  • A glossary of terms for age-related vision loss and descriptions of various conditions such as macular degeneration or glaucoma.

The updated site - which is available in both English and Spanish - was unveiled at an event in Clearwater, Fla. with Tampa Bay Rays Spanish-language radio announcer Enrique Oliu. Enrique is a font of baseball knowledge. He is also blind. Listening to his broadcasts of Rays' games you would never know he couldn't see the action on the field.

Enrique's story is a source of tremendous inspiration and shows the wonderful things that can be accomplished through perseverance and effort.

I'm happy to say the AFB Senior Site was funded through a major grant from the Verizon Foundation. Today's expansion of the Web site is an example of the role technology can play in helping seniors access the information they need to make sound decisions about their health and increase their independence.

The Verizon Foundation has long supported technology to improve health care and accessibility. For more information on the Foundation's efforts to improve in those areas, please visit the Verizon Foundation Web site.

And, for some great information on how to cope, or help a loved one cope, with Diabetes and vision loss, please visit the new AFB Senior Site.

Patrick,

Thank you for passing on this information.  As a Registered Nurse in a busy emergency department, I treat diabetic patients every day, some who are losing sight.  I work in Mississippi, which is one of the leading states for high number of diabetics.  Being able to pass this information along to patients is another tool that I, as a nurse, can help to educate patients on how to live with diabetes.  Thank you again for the information.
