Guest blogging today is John P. Frantz, a vice president and associate general counsel for Verizon. He is also a coordinator for Verizon's new pro bono program, which is described in detail below.
With Veterans' Day approaching, it seems like a great time to share a new volunteer program that will help, among others, some of the brave men and women who have returned from duty in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Verizon attorneys and legal staff will provide free legal services to assist veterans on a wide-range of topics from disability benefits appeals and involuntary separation proceedings to supporting veteran entrepreneurs who need business-law assistance.
Unfortunately, Veterans are not alone in their need for legal services. Verizon's new pro bono program was created to help meet that need in communities where the company has legal offices.
The new program will match our attorneys and legal staff to individuals and nonprofits who are in need of free legal services. The emphasis of the program is on civil matters involving education, domestic violence, and supporting veterans. The advancement of education and the prevention of domestic violence are two of the signature causes of the Verizon Foundation, the com pany's philanthropic arm.
As part of the new program, Verizon attorneys, paralegals and staff (more than 700 in all) are encouraged to volunteer at least 25 hours a year.
Helping us get the project off the ground is law firm DLA Piper. Verizon also joined the Corporate Pro Bono Challenge - a program sponsored by Corporate Pro Bono. The Challenge's goal is for at least half of the members of Verizon's legal department to participate in the program.
As a company, we've long been committed to volunteerism, with employees having provided more than 3 million hours of service since 2000. However, over the years, I've consistently heard many of my colleagues in the legal department say that one of the things that they miss most about practicing at a law firm is the pro bono work.
This program gives them that opportunity, including a chance to give something back to those in need and to our brave men and women in uniform.
