My posts this week are going to be about a few of the men and women from Verizon who exemplify the passion and energy of our nearly 200,000 employees. It is exactly that enthusiasm that drove our employees to donate more than 733,000 hours of volunteer time in 2010.
While it’s not possible to introduce you to all those volunteers, I’d like to introduce you to three who are highlighted in this year’s Corporate Responsibility report.
Today, meet Dalia Santiago.
Dalia is a Drafter on our Outside Plant Engineering team in Brooklyn, New York. She volunteers with the Verizon Pioneers, a group of active and retired employees that volunteer in the areas of education, literacy, internet safety and domestic violence.
Amazingly, the Pioneers are celebrating their 100th anniversary as a service organization this year.
Dalia’s chapter of Verizon's Pioneers has two Pioneer Clown Units. The units perform in all 5 boroughs of New York City. They entertain at different events and partner with the Community of Mayors of NY, a group of executives that takes disabled children on various outings.
Dalia joined the Community of Mayors to help out with special outings to amusement parks and museums. She says, “We especially enjoyed participating in Operation Santa Claus at JFK Airport. The program hosted more than 4,000 kids with special needs who were served lunch and refreshments, received toys and greeted Macy’s Santa Claus.”
