School is out. Talk to your kids about online safety.

Jack McArtney

Our guest blogger, once again, is Jack McArtney.  Jack manages issues surrounding online safety for Verizon.  He has played a key role in the introduction of Verizon Safeguards and numerous parental control products and services for Verizon Wireless customers.

Today’s message focuses on summer vacation and how to help kids stay responsible online.

June is National Internet Safety month and an appropriate time of year to remind parents that online and on phone awareness should go hand-in-hand with the annual school break for summer vacation.

With kids of all ages spending more time at home during the summer, and more time on the Internet through PC’s, cell phones and tablets, parents should reconnect with them about the important rules of using the Internet.

Online SafetyOnline safety is everyone’s responsibility. The best advice is for parents to be aware of what their kids are doing on the Internet and regularly monitor their activity.  Verizon Wireless has released a video tutorial to help parents learn how to track their family’s wireless usage through their handset and through MyVerizon.  There are also many free resources available that offer guidance, connect parents with experts and explain the technical know-how needed to help keep kids safer online, including Verizon’s own Parental Controls Center.

Parents should also consider helping kids understand that personal information is just that, and that they should not be sharing information on social networking sites that might endanger them or family members and friends.

There is also nothing wrong with establishing a clearly defined set of rules.  The kids are just coming off a year of following rules in school, so a few house rules during the summer shouldn’t be onerous.

Finally, it’s important for parents to communicate with their children.  It’s easy to get caught up in our busy lives and neglect the opportunity to ask children about what they do online or to discuss such things as inappropriate content or cyberbullying.  Just add online safety to the many areas in life where parents can educate their children on what’s expected of them.

Talk to your kids, your friends and your family about the important issue of online safety.  Share your questions and comments with us on the Parental Controls Center.  We’d love to hear from you.  Together we can promote responsible use of technology and guide the digital citizens of tomorrow!  Have a great summer!
