In 2010, Verizon improved its carbon efficiency by more than 15 percent. This year, we plan to improve energy efficiency by an additional 15 percent.
Our decision to announce a sustainability goal publicly is new for Verizon. In the past, we’ve chosen to talk about results we have achieved, rather than focus on what we plan to do.
By stating our goals publicly and developing a transparent metric to measure the amount of electricity and fuel used in our buildings and vehicles, we’re hoping to set a standard to show that it is possible, and in fact beneficial, to grow as a company and improve energy efficiency.
Our new carbon intensity metric and sustainability goal are just two of the ideas detailed in Verizon’s 2010/2011 Corporate Responsibility Report.
In the report we also note that Verizon has:
Our report also provides details on our launch of several ‘green’ consumer devices and the conversion of over 325,000 residential customer accounts to paperless billing.
Additionally, over 30 recycling events were conducted across the country last year collecting over 170,000 pounds of material from employees and community members.
And while that number doesn’t quite measure up to our corporate recycling program that brought in over 4.7 million pounds of equipment, we plan to continue to expand our community recycling efforts with a target of 350,000 pounds for 2011.
We hope you will take some time to read about our sustainability efforts. We know our efforts to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of our operations is an ongoing goal, it is never truly done. But with our 2010/2011 CR report we hope to show that we have some great work under way and terrific ideas for a greener, cleaner future.
