Last month, I encouraged readers to join Verizon employees and our partners in the annual Season's Readings campaign. Today, I'm writing to say thank you.
Thanks to your generosity and the giving spirit of our Verizon employees, 109,000 children's books have been collected and will be given to more than 350 schools and nonprofit organizations across the country.
That means that thousands of children across the country will have access to the age-appropriate books necessary to build the fundamental reading skills essential to learning.
And today, as many schools are forced to make difficult budget decisions and possibly postpone the purchase of new materials, every contribution makes a difference, as reflected in the words of Bob Pape, principal of Army Trail Elementary School in Addison, Illinois.
"Army Trail serves many students of low-income, and in a time when resources are scarce, a donation such as this will go to great use."
I would also like to thank our partners, First Book and Random House Children's Books for their assistance on this successful campaign.
