Today our guest blogger is Jayne Mayer, Director of Employee Engagement at Verizon. Today she writes about a project our employees took on in the Tampa Bay area to collect items for people in need.
From April 1 to June 30, Tampa Bay was buzzing. Verizon employees were spreading the word to their friends, families and customers about the 90-day Kindness Campaign, a collaborative effort to bring food, toy and blood donations to people in need in the Tampa Bay area.
This campaign is an excellent example of employee-driven philanthropy. Thousands of employees in the Tampa Bay area rallied around the inaugural Kindness Campaign, resulting in more than 150 volunteer hours by Verizon management and IBEW Local 824 members. The collective effort benefited Feeding America Tampa Bay. Other “Kindness” Program recipients include Florida Blood Services and Toys for Tots.
In the final installment of the Campaign, employees held a friendly competition among the 24 “work yards” in the Tampa Bay area, to see which yard could raise the most food donations. Ultimately employees and customers donated more than 15,000 pounds of food and contributed more than $8,000 to Feeding America Tampa Bay. And for the record, the Tampa North district took the high honor in the “Last Yard Standing” contest.
Verizon Florida’s Region Operations President Jeanmarie Milla said she was proud of her employees but especially touched by the partnership they created with Verizon’s customers to address an important community issue.
It speaks volumes about Verizon’s commitment to volunteerism. Through Verizon Volunteers, one of the nation’s largest employee volunteer programs, our employees and retirees participate in community service. In 2010, more than 730,000 hours of support were logged. And when an employee volunteers 50 hours with one organization, Verizon provides that nonprofit a $750 grant.
Verizon is committed to supporting the causes that our employees and our communities care about most. And our success is always sweeter when shared with our customers.
