Verizon has completed its largest solar energy project to date. The location? Two Central Offices on Long Island, N.Y. The first, at 35 Prospect Avenue in Port Washington, is a 108-solar panel installation on the roof, churning out 25 kilowatts of power. The second, at 741 Zeckendorf Boulevard in Garden City, is a 221-solar panel system producing 50 kilowatts of power.
Both projects were completed in early November. In addition to the solar panels, the Garden City Central Office is also home to one of the largest fuel cell plants in the world at 1.4 megawatts of power. Combined with the new solar panels, this Verizon facility is one of the greenest and most self-sustaining buildings in the region, with 75 percent of its energy use coming from clean energy.
The alternative energy sector is constantly evolving, and the technology to use energy more efficiently is constantly improving. Right now, solar energy plays just a small role in our plans to manage our energy use — sophisticated electricity monitoring, consolidating operations, equipment decommissioning and other initiatives have a much larger effect in the short term. But these panels demonstrate that solar power can make a viable contribution to our sustainability efforts. Combined with federal grants, we expect to make back our investment in these two solar projects in a couple of years. And with an expected life of 40 years, they’ll be around for a long time. And they’re tough – both projects have already survived a hurricane, tropical storm, and an earthquake.
