When it Comes to Children and the Internet, It Takes a Village to Keep Them Safe

by Employee ‎06-15-2012 08:04 PM - edited ‎06-15-2012 08:06 PM

nneka_ezenwa133x236.jpgToday’s guest blogger is Nneka Ezenwa, a Verizon employee and mother of two young girls. She attended our free Internet Safety Month webinar, “How to Keep Your Children Safe on the Internet” and wanted to share her thoughts on the event. A replay of the Live Meeting webinar is available online.

I’m doing what I can to teach my children (ages 9 and 5) how to stay safe on the Internet.  However there are so many ways kids can get online now that it’s hard to keep up with them all. But as the African saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. It’s comforting to know that companies like Verizon and online villages like Common Sense Media are offering parents tools like a Family Media Agreement and teaching kids how to “self-reflect before you self-reveal.”

Although the webinar was focused on middle and high school children and mine are still in elementary school, I still got a lot of valuable information from the session. For instance, I learned that the average 8-18 year old spends 50+ hours a week on media outside the school. I also learned that cyberbullying is becoming increasingly prevalent with one-third of children aged 10-18 having experienced this hurtful act. If you didn't catch the webinar live, you should check out the replay.

There's so much I don't know and need to learn and I suspect that many other parents feel the same way. I hope Verizon continues to offer these sessions. One suggestion: I wish there was more information on how to keep your kids safe on devices like the Nintendo DSi, Wii, etc. I’ll stay tuned for more.

In the meantime, this article on Verizon's Parental Controls Center may be useful. It addresses parental controls on Nintendo, Wii and other online gaming platforms. It's wriiten by video game experts at the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB), a nonprofit organization that assigns age and content ratings for computer and video games.
