Safety Net does great work providing education on technology abuse and online safety, particularly to people who help victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking.

Young Readers and Early Adopters pilot porgramAn innovative education pilot program in Georgia celebrated a successful launch last week. Funded in part by a  $250,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation, Young Readers & Early Adopters aims to improve reading and comprehension for K-2nd grade students in low-income Latino communities and incorporate technology into classroom instruction. When the first batch of kids in the pilot program graduated, Verizon's Julie Smith was on hand to meet these students and was struck by how technology in the smallest hands made a big difference.

We actively recruit military personnel transitioning to the civilian workforce and our Emergency Military Leave benefits are second to none. We do this not only because it’s the right thing to do, but also because it makes smart business sense. Veterans have superb leadership skills and great adaptability.

ISTE2012_133X263.jpgThere is a lot of buzz in San Diego about the Verizon Foundation working with the International Society for Technology in Education to provide educators at 12 underserved schools with year-long professional development that will prepare them to use mobile technologies to support digital-age learning in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Guest blogger Yolanda Ramos explains.

The study looks at eight consumer activities enabled by the development of broadband technology.

The US Ignite Partnership, a public-private initiative launched just this week, will showcase how next-generation applications built to operate on ultrafast networks can transform what is possible for American science institutions, businesses, and families.

nneka_ezenwa133x236.jpgToday’s guest blogger is Nneka Ezenwa, a Verizon employee and mother of two young girls. She attended our free Internet Safety Month webinar, “How to Keep Your Children Safe on the Internet.”

I’m doing what I can to teach my children (ages 9 and 5) how to stay safe on the Internet.  However there are so many ways kids can get online now that it’s hard to keep up with them all. But as the African saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child.

Verizon Supports New Digital Citizenship Platform for Parents and Kids

onlinesafety133x270.jpgIn support of Internet Safety Month, I wanted to share a video compiled by the Family Online Safety Institute that presents facts and stats about the global state of digital safety. Many of these stats suggest that parents feel comfortable setting rules and boundaries around technology. But they also suggest that young people may not be as unaware or immune to using technology responsibly as some believe.

Take a Stand

rose_kirk133x175.jpgIt’s not easy to stand up and do something; it’s even tougher to take action.  However, action is needed to make change and that’s what was discussed at a panel the 2012 CECP Corporate Philanthropy Summit today in New York City.

I was joined by senior leaders at Chevron Corporation, Hilton Worldwide and Fenton Communications to discuss the challenging societal issues that our companies each address.  From ending domestic violence to human trafficking and HIV/AIDS, we have all made significant commitments and have made tremendous results over the years.

Large Campuses: It Will Soon Be Super Easy to Calculate Carbon Emissions

by Employee ‎05-08-2012 10:10 AM - edited ‎05-08-2012 10:13 AM

Adam Markham small.jpgGuest post from Adam Markham President of Clean Air-Cool Planet which works collaboratively with campuses, communities and corporations to pioneer and scale-up innovative solutions aimed at reducing carbon emissions and preparing for climate change. CA-CP also works to build support for environmentally effective and economically efficient national climate policies.

College campuses are ideal proving grounds for finding solutions to America’s energy and climate change problems. They are leading the way in achieving emissions reductions from their operations and supply chains, and they are driving the technical innovation needed for the shift to a low-carbon economy and are training America’s future leaders.

The maxim “you can’t manage what you don’t measure” has become commonplace in the world of sustainability, but for Clean Air-Cool Planet (CA-CP), these are words to live by.

There are more than 4,000 colleges and universities in the United States with at least 15 million students at any one time.  More than 90% of colleges and universities that currently measure and publicly report their campus greenhouse gas emissions do so using our Campus Carbon Calculator.  A large and growing number also use the Calculator’s “Solutions Module” to analyze the life-cycle costs, cash flows, and impacts of projects aimed at reducing their institutional carbon footprints.

We’re excited that soon our Campus Carbon Calculator will be available as an online tool.  Verizon’s support of Clean Air-Cool Planet’s program to help thousands of college campuses across the country streamline and improve their carbon measurement and management comes at an important time.

bloomberg133.jpg50% off!

It sounds great when you’re standing online waiting to pay. It sounded good to us, too.

Earlier this week we announced our goal to cut in half our carbon intensity – the amount of energy needed to move data across Verizon’s networks -- by 2020. We’re using our 2009 carbon intensity level as the benchmark and the starting point for our goal.

One exciting development announced today is a collaboration with VIA Motors to develop and test extended range electric pick-up trucks and vans in Verizon's fleet.
