Today on FIOS Digital Voice you must dial 10 or 11 digital dialing for all numbers even for numbers within the same area code. This is a major inconvenience for me as all of my phones, alarm system, etc. will have to be reprogrammed. 99% of our calls are in the same area code and having to dial the extra numbers is a nuisance and not worth switching.
Make digital voice 7 digital dialing for local calls and you got me as a customer for phone service. I will stick with my current VOIP provider until this change will occur.
Probably should get used to it. My area in PA basically ran out of exchanges so they did what is called an overlay (2 area codes covering the same area). This means that I have had to dial 10 digits for any call for at least 8 years regardless of the area code of the recieving call.
I suspect that eventually alll calls will have to be made made this way.
As Keyboards said, I think that is eventually the future for all of us so you might as well get used to it. Here in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area we switched from 7 to 10 digit dialing on our POTS phones 10 to 15 or more years ago because of running out of numbers due to the population growth. We hated it for a couple of weeks but got used to it pretty quickly, even my wife, who does not like change at all, adapted. And really, how long does it take to go in and edit all of the entries in your phones and security system? It is a one-time step.
It's also the reason I didn't switch to digital voice either. My daughter has a lot of local numbers memorized. It would be confusing to tell her to remember another three numbers before the 7 digits. I don't like it either. In my area we do not dial the area code for local numbers on our home phone or cell phone. I like it that way. I also didn't have to dial the area code when I had Cablevision's VOIP phone service either.
I'm with Keyboards and Justin on this one... we had a split and THEN an overlay where I grew up... to me, 10 digit dialing's no big deal
Agree with the overlay and cell phone comments.
Seems like a low price to pay to get cheaper phone service that is subject to lower taxes (or so I have been told).
