Delete unwanted channels

Status: Not Likely

It would be fantastic to be able to DELETE unwanted channels from the TV listing, DVR…..

I know there is a favorites menu which is terrible, awful, dreadful to use, I also know there is a subscribe option in the TV listing which lists all the channels I do not want or care for.

I just want to be able to go into a menu where I can delete unwanted channels from all views .

It’s very simple to do and it’s called programing.

And if you would just use the Favorites function you would get nearly all of what you want. It is easy, it works well, and there is no use complaining about a missing  "delete" function because it is just not available with FiOS at this time (it was in the distant past, before Favorites). I suppose there is the possibility that Verizon might add it back some time in the future, but they have not announced anything that I am aware of.

Have you actually made an attempt to use Favorites? If not, or if you didn't get the results you expected, maybe this will help:

There is an entire section in the document attached to the first post in that thread about setting up and using Favorites. And once the Favorites list is set up on the DVR you can use it via the web.

Would it be possible to put the STB in parental control mode and block all the unwanted channels, or does that just cause you to enter a code to see them, rather than skip them?

The favorites work just fine for me and I am happy with them.  My only pet peeve are those **bleep** VOD channels, even if you have blocked them on your favorites if you type in one of the channel numbers it still comes up. VERY ANNOYING and a Very POOR decsion by Verizon to drop those channels all over the place like they did.

What irritates me is I set my guide to subscribed channels only and there is one channel (at least) that shows on the guide that I am not subscribed to. I did not subscribe to any premium packages and this is porno. I tried blocking it but if I use parental control they block out other ratings  that apply to most movies that I would watch. Why can you not just block X rated.

The favorites function is fine, but why not have a "hide" option for channels that we don't subscribe to or don't even watch?

Big thumbs up for this suggestion. Favorites is fine for creating a small list of, well, favorites, but deleting channels is the complement to this, letting the viewer delete the minority of channels they'll never watch.

I don't speak any Spanish, so why not allow me to skip over Spanish language channels when I'm scrolling around, and from the Guide? Or shopping channels. I've never purchased anything from a shopping channel, and I never will, so let me delete them.

And that is EXACTLY what Favorites is for! Set up a Favorites list, put the channels you want to ever watch in it, set it as the default Guide and never see another channel again. And since you can set up a second Favorites list if you want to, use that for your "small list".

You are certainly not the first to ask to "delete" channels, but as a long time FiOS TV user who implemented Favorites as soon as Verizon made the function available, I just truely don't understand why Favorites does not satisfy your (and others) needs. Can you explain specifically why Favorites does not satisfy you?

Now having said that, Verizon does need to quickly improve the Favorites function IMO: more lists (5 maybe), ability to save a list in case an STB needs to be completely reset or replaced, and copy a list from one STB and propogate it to other STBs would be a good start.

I just truly don't understand, WHY YOU DON"T UNDERSTAND why Favorites does not satisfy others needs.

Favorites are for favorites of all items. So hence just a few channels (3-10). It is not the feature that with good user experience be used to separate the wheat from the chaff.

After having written down about 100 channels to hide/delete from ever having to see again (like ever other time I've ever set up TV's) I was appalled to find out that whoever manages FiOS was either ignorant of this feature or too much of a slimey salesman to include it.  Now like many I have to go through and waste more time to denote which channels I need to put in the favorites list!? How poor of an experience is that? Lame.

Have you actually tried Favorites? Based on your comments it appears to me that you haven't, or you don't understand the function, if you think it is for only 3-10 channels. So lets try to summarize:

All Channels: Just what it sounds like, all of the channels that FiOS delivers in your area, including many you possibly (likely?) have no interest in, all SD/ HD duplicates, and many you don't have access to anyway because you haven't subscribed to those channels (depends of course on what subscriptions you have).

Subscribed: All of the channels that you are entitled to receive based on your subscriptions, including many you possibly (likely?) have no interest in, and all SD/HD duplicates.

Favorites lists: One or two lists, each containing only the channels you are most or only interested in. Compared to Subscribed, allows you to not include all of those you have no interest in and SD/HD duplicates. With two lists you can have perhaps a more inclusive list of channels you may watch, and a smaller list of specific or different channels (I for example use Favorites 2 to include only those premium channels that Verizon offers free previews for occasionally, easy to add, even easier to remove when the free preview ends).

When I choose Subscribed, I see all of the channels from 1 to 50 and I only care about 2 of those, all of the SD channels that I want to watch only in HD, and many (and I really mean many) religeous, shopping, VOD, foreign language, and music channels, etc. Honestly, if I have no interest in those channels, why would I want them in the Guide?

My Favorites 1 list has maybe 50 or so channels in it out of the hundreds available. It includes 100% of the channels I regularly watch plus some I occasionally watch. Setting up the initial list is easy, go into the Menu ==> Settings ==> Favorites 1 and select some channels you know you want to include (I would never include all of the channels in my initial Favorites list, too many deletes afterwards). From that starting point you can easily add a channel to your Favorites list (or remove one) at any time using the Options button on the remote.

One last thing, I don't know if this will help at all or not, but here is a link to a document I wrote a couple of years ago about getting started with FiOS TV, it has a fairly complete section on using Favorites, maybe some of the information there may help you change your mind:

The document is a little out of date since there have been a couple of releases of the IMG since then, but then again there has been very little change in those new releases.

Maybe the above doesn't change your mind, or anybody elses, but I really think that you should give Favorites a real try, I think you will find it much better than you think it is. Plus keep in mind that Verizon just delivered the latest version of the IMG, 1.9.4. I suspect there will not be a new update for quite some time, so I think it is unlikely you will see whatever it is you really want any time soon, even if Verizon decides to implement it. So IMO Favorites is the only solution for the foreseeable future.

And once again, I truely don't understand why anybody would be satisfied with Subscribed, that option simply includes far too many channels I have no interest in to be remotely useful to me. I encourage everyone to at least give the Favorites function a try.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you decide.
