Option to purchase STB

Status: Acknowledged
by bstmstrxellos on ‎08-14-2012 07:14 PM

Please give us the option to purchase the Set Top Boxes from you so that we can decided if we would rather rent it per month or just pay a one time fee and not have to worry about rental increases.

I agree i have had the service for 21 months now and have been pay on an average USD 15 for DVR Rent. after a certain period there should be no rent applied to it

I also agree.  At $5.99 (the new and higher rate) per digital adapter I think Verizon has created a cash cow.  I would much prefer to own the box and its maintenance (probably none) than pay that rate forever.  I may find that after my current 2 year contract is complete I will return to my previous cable provider and eliminate the need for a digital adapter at all.

It's a great idea, only it's never ever going to happen.

You can already buy your own STB. Any one of the mulitple PVRs (Tivo, Ceton, etc) can be purchased. Then you just have to rent the cable card at a much lower price.

I have heard the DVRs can cost upwards of $400. And that is just the hardware price. They also have to pay for software development.

Don't think that any cable provider lets you buy a STB from them.

The STBs are not the same as a DVR, and should be available at a reasonable cost. Same as a ATSC adapter. QAM adaptors are available, but none are out their with Verizon features. Why does the same hardware cost more now that it has been in my house since it was made? I believe the STBs should be available like a QAM tuner. Let me pay perhaps a fixed price, and then maybe the cost of a cable card or lifetime subscription. TiVO STB and not DVR? Or Should that be Verizon STB? Why keep paying month after month for the hardware that has been well paid for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A couple of months ago, my son signed up for FIOS and received a STB and Whole house DVR for free for life.  This kind of frosts me since I've had the service for four years and am paying approx. $32 per month for 2 DVRs.  Maybe i'll just cancel when my renewal comes up in November and go back to Cablevision for a year.  They're advertising no charge DVRs for new signons.  Then maybe keep an eye on FIOS ads for when Verizon comes up with some giveaway for new subscribers and then switch back.  One could keep this up forever.

I fail to understand why Verizon hasn't come up with a reward system for loyal customers.  It's like they don't care of their subscriber base keeps turning over.  I guess I'm just clueless when it comes to communications marketing.

Agreed!

I can't understand why set top box rentals just went up again.  You certainly didn't upgrade my box or spend any money on it, so why does it now cost me more to rent it?

If your new boxes cost more then don't charge me more for my old one - just charge more to the people who get the new boxes.  Or give me one of the new ones - maybe it'll work better.

With this increase, I have a mind to go buy my own digital converter.

The only issue is, you can not get a digital converter that works with QAM, and a cable card. Unless you go with a DVR type Card that must be installed in a PC, and created your own DVR with the use of a Cable Card. Or a TiVo which you buy and also costs every month. Then you lose items like VOD, Widgets and other items. .

I was looking at Directv, and they make you pay an up front fee when you want to add another STB, then $10 a month for HD on that box. The "Fee" is like buying the box, and then paying for it every month. Unlike years ago, with DTV, you pay for the hardware and they still own it. I have two SD STBs for their minimum Spanish package, and was looking at adding to the system. Not now! As a new customer they give great deals on hardware, but change anything and your contract renews.

So all things considered, while I am not happy with the $6 more I pay, that virtually erased my discount for MR DVR, Verizon is still better. I still get the discount, but the boxes cost a bit more. So life goes on.

First, you aren't paying for the box. You pay for the programming being sent to the box. Even if you did purchase it, you would be billed for programming. Second, this is the first time they have increased the box costs in I have to say over 4 years. The cable around here goes up once a year at least. Third, the boxes in your home may not have changed but the technology going to those boxes does change. Finally, I hate paying more for stuff too. I'm on a budget and so I know how much every penny counts but this is life. Every company has price increases. Electric, gas, groceries -- it all goes up. Verizon is no different.
