Remember Channel Favorites setting

Status: Acknowledged
by Josephj11 on ‎06-23-2012 10:10 AM

When I press the "Guide" button on my remote,  the guide displays "All Channels".

Then, when I press the heart "Favorites" button, it displays "Favorites 1".

The problem is that I always want it to display "Favorites 1" by default (the last favorites setting I used).

Until your latest update (around 1 week ago), this worked fine.  It remembered whatever favorites setting was used last and displayed that.  Now, I get "All Channels" all the time and have to do extra work of pressing the "Favorites" button.  This is annoying.

This is a regression, not an improvement.  Please fix it.

There is nothing for Verizon to fix. The latest 1.9.1 upgrade for some reason reset a couple of settings, all you need to do is go in and set them again. They are Modes and Last Guide State.

This information has been posted over and over since 1.9.1 started being distributed, all you needed to do was a search (search on "favorites" would do it) on the Forums to easily find the answer. Or even just look at a few threads on the subject.

@Justin Thanks for the (unfriendly) good information.  I might have tried that, but first I called FiOS support and they told me there was no "fix" for the problem.  In the future, I will search the forums before calling support.

Okay, time for my two cents. You are both right. And you are both wrong. I banged my head into this wall for quite a while before I think I finally figured it out.

First, you do indeed need to check your settings after the latest round of updates. Here are the settings that I checked/changed on mine:

MENU>SETTINGS>FAVORITE CHANNELS>FAVORITES BUTTON>TOGGLE FLIP BY FAVORITES

MENU>SETTINGS>FAVORITE CHANNELS>FLIP BY FAVORITES>FAVORITES 1

MENU>SETTINGS>TELEVISION>MODES>ENABLE

MENU>SETTINGS>TELEVISION>LAST VIEWED GUIDE STATE>ENABLE

Are these all the settings you need to check? I don't know. Do your settings have to be the same as mine? I don't know. But I believe the last setting is the most important. And I believe it's this last setting that is causing the problem.

So now, even after you've checked all these settings, whenever the box gets reset, it forgets the LAST VIEWED GUIDE STATE, and defaults back to the ALL CHANNELS guide. And the boxes get reset all the time due to internal errors, software updates, and power outages. The way to know that your box has been reset is if you see a red screen when you turn it on. However if someone else has turned it on before you, you won't see the red screen, and will naturally assume that this is a randomly occurring glitch.

So the answer is: Check your settings, but until Verizon finds a way to more permanently store the LAST VIEWED GUIDE STATE, you will have to hit the FAVORITES button (or the OPTIONS button depending on your preferred setting) when viewing an ALL CHANNELS guide to re-establish this setting.

Is this the last word? Probably not. But I hope it helps.

lacticacidtrip,

I am not argueing wit you, but I know absolutely, positively, totally accurately, that in my case the only changes I had to make after the 1.9.1 update was to Modes and Last Viewed Guide State. My settings for Favorites Button and Flip by Favorites did not change during the update, and I did/do have them set as you posted. And others have posted that those were the only changes they needed to make after getting 1.9.1.

And since I got the update quite a while ago (I am in VHO 1 which, along with VHO 3, was the first to get 1.9.1) I have had several of the "semi-regular" and/or new software resets, and I did not have to go back and change anything after them.

Of course what I have said above could be incorrect any time there is an update or reset in the future, but the ones I have had so far since getting 1.9.1 have not affected any of those settings.

Anyway, always a good idea to check your Settings after an update, especially when things appear to no longer work correctly. :smileyvery-happy:

hey Justin,

i had added in all the settings i checked in case others hadn't gotten that far along with their settings. you are right about the main settings to change, i just wanted to provide concise clarity on where to find them. i thought you might be rather interested in the second part of my post. i'm not saying that the LAST VIEWED GUIDE STATE setting is changed after a reset. what i was trying to say is that the box forgets what the last viewed guide state was after a reset. i tried this out just this morning on both a Motorola SD STB and an old Motorola HM-HD-DVR. set the guide to favorites 1, unplug the box, plug it back in, and the guide goes back to ALL CHANNELS. so at first I was fighting with the wrong menu setting, then i was fighting with a rash of power outages around here. figuring out what the heck was going on was driving me nuts.

lacticacidtrip,

I just misunderstood what you said in the first part I think. Sorry.....

Regarding the second part, you are right. I just tested on one of my HD STBs, pulled the power and plugged it back in, the Full Guide showed All Channels, and I know it was set to Favorites 1 before I pulled the power. Not good.....

Fortunately so far lately no power outages here in North Texas. :smileyhappy: We had some rotating blackouts a couple of summers ago, but since then the power has been very reliable. When we first move into this house 32 years ago it seemed the power would go off about weekly, but over time the co-op has really improved their reliability.

Hope your power stays up from now on.

thanks for double-checking my work, Justin. it's good to know that not all of my issues are just in my head. as for the power outages, i unfortunately live in VA. but fortunately unlike many other people here i was only without power for about 14 hours after the storms rolled through. i don't know where i'd be if i was still like so many others here in triple degree heat, high humidity, no electric, no AC. i am blessed that i get to be on here and complain about things that have little importance.
