SET TOP BOXES

TVS WITHOUT SET TOP BOXES.

VERIZON FIOS NEEDS TO COME UP WITH A WAY FOR TVS TO WORK WITHOUT A SET TOP FOR EACH TV THAT THEY USE. I WORK WITH SOME PEOPLE THAT HAVE BRIGHT HOUSE NETWORKS THEY DO NOT WANT TO SWITCH TO VERIZON FIOS BECAUSE A SET TOP BOX IS NEEDED WITH EVERY TV THAT THEY USE. WITH BRIGHT HOUSE NETWORKS & COMCAST YOU  DO NOT NEED A SET TOP BOX. SOME PEOPLE AT WORK SAY THEY LIKE TO TAKE THEIR TVS OUTSIDE  TO WATCH USING A SPLITTER & CABLE. WHY IS IT THAT WITH VERIZON FIOS YOU NEED A SET TOP BOX WITH EVERY TV YOU USE?

Some cable systems still serve analog video, but that is expected to be reduced over time to fit more content down the network. The FCC required FiOS to remove all analog video, so of course we did... Keep your eyes out for CES news on this topic.

But as a point of order, you'll need a TV that is broadband enabled.. unfortunately old school CRT's that can't connect to the home network still won't play without some other device.

That may be true for Comcast in your area, but in the SE Pennylvania area Comcast has gone all digital just like FiOS.

You need to be able to pause, stop, rewind set top box w/multi-room dvr.

wen059,

Isn't going to happen with the existing STBs that Verizon uses. The STBs (not DVRs) do not have a hard drive or enough memory to do what you are asking for.

Now you CAN do what you want if you start recording the program on a DVR, then watch it via the multi-room support. So it is easy to do from the STB: start the program recording (or set up a recording in advance), press the DVR button on the remote, find the program, and start watching. Now you can Pause, Rewind, etc. Of course the downside is that each DVR can record a maximum of two programs concurrently, and when that is being done no live channel can be watched on that DVR, only other recordings.

Hopefully the next generation of STBs/DVRs/Home Servers, or whatever Verizon decides to deliver, will provide the capability you are asking for. And they are well aware that customers want to be able to do what you describe.

Of course another option available to you, for more $$$, is to replace your STB(s) with a DVR(s). Now you can do what you want, plus you can record two more programs at the same time than you can now.
