Upgrade home routers with GigE ports

Status: In Progress
by dmking79 on ‎03-30-2011 08:05 AM

Since higher bandwidth/more throughput was announced this morning (3/30), it would be nice if our home routers were upgraded to include GigE (gigabit ethernet) ports so all that lovely bandwidth doesn't get bottlenecked at the router and we can actually enjoy and use what we pay for.

Weird concept, I know

And don't make this something insanely easy for new customers to get and make it nearly impossible for current subscribers to obtain.  I know there's no incentive for you to care about people who are already signed up, but it'd be nice if you pretended to care once in a while

Why do you need GigE? Didn't think there was a residential offering higher than 50Mb. If so, going to GigE won't do anything.

Here here.  Gigabit routers are cheap at Best Buy or other big box stores.  Same for Wireless 802.11n.  I have a gigabit switch and a second n wireless access point running in my home, but they are both behind the 100 Mbit router and g wireless access ports that FiOS provides.  Time for Verizon FiOS to upgrade.

I only use the VZ router for handling DHCP and maintaining functionality of the features of my FIOS.  Internally I'm running a Gig LAN.  I link from the Actiontec to an 8-port Trendnet Gig switch and everything comes off that including a D-Link DIR655 that is running as a N WAP and Gig switch.  The 100Mbit Actiontec shouldn't have any impact on your internet speeds with residential service even at 50/20.  I realize this requires the user to make an additional investment but it's relatively inexpensive ($80 for the DIR655 and $40 for the additional switch) and you don't have to be constricted by the Actiontec.  I don't imagine VZ will upgrade hardware that 99% of their customers wouldn't be able to take advantage of.  Maybe make it an optional upgrade for a reasonable fee though?

Agree totally with JBell. Have only a fast Ethernet switch in the router isn't going to slow down internet access for your network. I currently only use one wired port on my actiontec router plus the wireless connections as well. That one port gets plugged into an 8 port linksys giga Ethernet switch witch all other wired connections go to. This way all interior network traffic has the higher bandwidth, which is the only place it is needed with current internet connection speeds. When that connection surpasses 100 Mbit then we need the giga Ethernet switch in the router. But as it has been said, it would be nice to have it in the router to reduce costs on my end. But I need more ports anyway so ill still be ponying up the extra cash for another switch. One thing to note: do not just buy a hub because it is cheaper because hubs are "stupid" in that they do no direction of traffic they just broadcast everything they see. A switch will direct the packets to where they need to go and maintain the internal network speed.

You may find it easier to simply have your internet connection delivered over Ethernet instead of coax. Even if you're a tv customer, it can be setup to work fine. It does in my home. Connect the coax to the port on the router as before, but connect the ethernet wan port to a port on your "real" router. This allows your set top boxes to get guide data and VoD content, and you get to choose what to use for your router. Best of all worlds. It completely freaked out the installer when it worked. Mind you, when we first got fios, fios tv didn't exist, so it was always delivered over Ethernet. Actually, at this point, we've got the actiontec router switched off, as we dumped our STB's in favor of cable cards installed in tivos. So, no need for that boat anchor in the first place. :-) And I expect he could use gig e to accommodate the use of a .11n access point and a nas that has 1or more gig ports onboard.

I am a brand new fios customer and was disapointed to get a Rev. Router when I know others who are getting the Rev. G with gigabit ethernet ports. I don't want to have to use two routers or swtiches, it should all be done in one device. In this aspect my conversion to FioS has been a downgrade.

I agree with JBell.  Stop being cheap, just buy your own gigabit switch and plug it into the Actiontec and be done with it.  Verizon is an internet service provider, all they should have to do is get you your full speed internet connection, which they do with plenty of room to spare.

Why can't you have a router that's up to current standards (i.e. 802.11n rather than g or b)? What you provide doesn't allow us to take advantage of the ever-increasing speeds you offer. 802.11g came out in 2003, NINE (9) YEARS AGO, and the newest standard, 802.11ac is already a work in progress!

I have heard/read that

Verizon is testing a new DSL D-Link modem (DSL-2750B), that has the current Wireless standard.
