A 20th century Senate leader may not be the source of inspiration for most aspiring entrepreneurs, but Senator Everett Dirksen’s attributed quip about the Federal budget, “A billion here, a billion there. . . Pretty soon you’re talking real money,” is a starting point for how a business can grow.
The idea of making a billion dollars may be daunting to some, but not all. Take a look at what some young entrepreneurs are doing with and on the Internet. Beyond the likes of Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook, Matt Mickiwiecz is on his 5th company at age 27 and Meetup founder Scott Heiferman has a string of successes behind him, too, at 38. But most businesses still have a front door or direct service delivery like Quality First Basement Systems of Perth Amboy, NJ, or a local favorite of mine Frost Doughnuts in Mill Creek, WA.
The point is, whether you’re an Internet entrepreneur or someone who delivers a quality product or service on main street, you need to have the same passion, vision and commitment to succeed and you may find yourselves building a billion-dollar enterprise. Take a look at some of these success stories to help get your creative juices flowing.
In the meantime, test your idea to be sure you’ve got something people want and if you’ve got the online bug, see if you can sell your expertise there. After all, if you work your idea properly, pretty soon you could be talking real money!
