A Year of FiOS TV Competition in New York City

by Employee ‎07-28-2009 12:12 PM - edited ‎08-19-2009 05:56 PM

new-york-city-fire-escapes.jpgIt’s hard to imagine that up until a year ago, New York City – the city with the best of everything – didn’t have a world-class TV provider. New Yorkers were stuck with old cable TV, and didn’t have a choice of providers. The two big cable companies operating in the city had carved up the five boroughs so they didn’t compete with each other. Another company offered service in certain buildings, but not city-wide. How convenient!

Then on July 28, 2008 – a year ago today – Verizon launched FiOS TV across the city, and the citizens rejoiced. Presto, chango. TV competition was born in New York City.

When we opened for business, right out of the gate, we served 108 neighborhoods, and we launched with a market-leading 100 HD channels. Fast forward to today. Soon we’ll have television service in more than 170 neighborhoods. We’re up to 122 HD channels now in New York City, and big cable is trying desperately to keep up.

We’re making good progress on our promise to wire the entire city by 2014, and we expect to reach approximately 800,000 households by the end of this year.

During the first year New Yorkers have come to appreciate the unique features of FiOS TV: a superior interactive media guide, a multi-room DVR, interactivity with their computers and cell phones, features like Facebook, Twitter and ESPN Fantasy Football. Things their old cable companies just can’t do.

Ah, TV competition….it’s a wonderful thing. Just ask New Yorkers.

I am very disappointed on Verizon right now the Upper West Side of Manhattan is not wired with FIOS. Many folks including myself would like to dump  Big cable HD compressed, but Verizon focus right now is Queens NY. I know for sure there is  Verizon HUB around Columbia University, I just don't get  it why they haven't wired this part of the city yet.
