Big Cable, Bad Picture

by Employee ‎08-16-2009 07:28 PM - edited ‎08-20-2009 12:54 PM

fibersmall.JPGIt’s easy to forget just how bad old fashioned cable can be.   Watching the PGA Championship this afternoon, I was convinced it was raining at the Hazeltine National.  Well, it may have been rough weather forTiger Woods, who lost by three to Y.E. Yang, but the skies were only cloudy in Chaska, Minn.

The problem was that I was watching, not at home on my Verizon FiOS TV, but at another place on Big Cable (no need to embarrass the actual company).  Video noise sometimes made it hard to see the flight of the ball.  Occasionally, the picture would clear up only to go south again a few minutes later.  Maybe watching golf on FiOS TV has me spoiled.

Fiber optics all the way to the customer solves this problem, but no cable company has it.  That’s one of the reasons that, when the numbers were in for the second quarter of this year, of the 400,000 people who added cable, 300,000 of them added FiOS.   Thousands every week make the switch.

After watching old fashioned cable this afternoon, it is easy to see why.

Eric,

While the HD picture on FiOS is unmatched, the SD quality (particularly on the 6416 boxes) is surely nothing to brag about.  Verizon made some "minor" improvements a few months back, but its still very VERY bad.  Please take the plank out of your own eye before worrying about the spec your brother's....

I disagree with you. The SD picture quality on my QIP6416 improved dramatically last year with the IMG 1.6.2 update. It is really very good now on most SD channels on my HD LCD, and excellent on my old tube-type TVs with SD STBs. It certainly will never be confused for HD, but is very acceptable now. Plus, with the HD channels now available I don't watch anywhere near as much SD stuff as I used to, so even those below par are really not an issue any more. I will always want more and better, but really right now it very good at my house.

Extremely poor picture quality is one of the reasons I left cable for FiOS TV almost 4 years ago. No regrets.

Of course just my opinion.....Justin

Justin,

What Eric was describing is exactly what I thought when I was watching it on my 6416 box.  I literally thought it was raining too, and I was watching it on FiOS.  Furthermore, small text is still as blurry as ever.  They need to continue to improve the sharpness of the picture.  Obviously, just my opinion as well.
