Go Green with Verizon

Prius.JPGSimple changes can have a big impact.  That’s really clear when you think about some of the ways Verizon has reduced the environmental impact of our operations.

In the past eight years, Verizon Wireless’ HopeLine program has collected more than 5.6 million phones and kept more than 200 tons of batteries and electronic waste out of landfills.

We led the industry by establishing our own energy-efficiency standards for telecom equipment, requiring vendors to manufacture equipment that is 20 percent more efficient.  We also operate the largest fuel cell facility of its kind in the nation and we’re using and trialing other alternative energy sources including solar, geothermal and micro-turbines.

Last year, 16 million payments to Verizon were made online by wireline and wireless customers big and small.  Because of them, 97 million Verizon paper bills were replaced by online bills, saving 4.3 million pounds of paper or roughly 52,000 trees – twice as many as in New York’s Central Park.

Today, more than 2.5 million of our wireline customers currently receive and pay their monthly bills online.  Now, the rest of our residential wireline customers who move to paperless billing by Oct. 31 will not only help the environment, they’ll also be entered in a sweepstakes.  And the grand prize is pretty cool, and green: a fuel-efficient 2010 Toyota Prius Hybrid.

Paperless billing is a simple step that can help our customers save time and reduce clutter while helping the environment.  If you aren’t going paperless today, take a moment and join the effort at or log into your Verizon account at
