Kid in High School or College? Read this.

by Employee ‎09-14-2011 12:11 AM - edited ‎09-14-2011 10:08 AM

It will be a few more years before my young ones will be heading off to college.  But for those of you who have just gone through that transition, I can understand what a bitter-sweet moment it must have been.

From what I hear, many parents rush to get their kids the newest and greatest technologyto help them navigate high school or their first year of higher learning. (Luckily, my kids only require low-budget tools like crayons and paper folders). Whether it’s a laptop, tablet or desktop computer, these devices have become vital tools for college students.  Equally important, however, is making sure they’re loaded with security software to protect their irreplaceable files and systems.

It’s never too late to provide your college student with Internet securityservices and a service to backup those important college assignments and documents.  Keep in mind that some colleges and universities provide and even require that their students run anti-virus software, which the schools provide to protect their own networks. At the same time, you might as well update your own home computers and not have to begin paying for the services until everyone is home for Thanksgiving. This is particularly important if your student is younger, since you as the parent may very well be your home's "IT Department."

New customers can still take advantage of  three months of service free when signing up for a bundle of Verizon’s Internet Security Suite, with coverage for up to three computers, and Verizon Online Backup and Sharing service, with 50 gigabytes of storage.  At the end of the three months, if you decide you want to keep the services, you’ll be billed a discounted rate of $10 a month. And if you decide you’d like to start out with just the security suite, the first 30 days are free if you order online.

Sharing photo albums, home videos or other personal media files with your college students and vice versa also become easy with our Online Backup and Sharing service, making staying in touch easier.

Meanwhile, the McAfee-powered Verizon’s Internet Security Suite service will provide you some peace of mind about the fate of that expensive new laptop you helped them tuck away in their college-bound bundles.  One of the most powerful protection plans on the market, Verizon’s Internet Security Suite provides solutions for both PCs and Mac operating systems.  Let’s face, when it comes to fighting online viruses and other malware, prevention is the best medicine.

These two user-friendly solutions may not be the same as making sure your college kid’s got their favorite stuffed animal or childhood keepsake when they’re homesick.  But, then again, what is?

P.S. I’m a new blogger here. I’ll often write about online security, topics of sustainability, tech, some of the innovative work taking place at the company, general good news and news of interest. Let me know if there’s something you’d like to know about Verizon. Thanks for reading!
