The arrival of spring and its accompanying good weather finds many of us tackling spring cleaning chores. My list includes washing windows, cutting the grass, and planting some hydrangeas. This is also the time of year for graduations, weddings, and outdoor recreational activities. Got some of those, too.
Undoubtedly this will be a busy weekend. But if I have two minutes to spare this weekend, I’ll save it for “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports.”
The 138th Kentucky Derby takes place this Saturday in Louisville at the storied Churchill Downs Racetrack and it’s one of those “must-see TV” events. Post time is 6:24 p.m. ET and will be carried live on NBC. The Derby is not only one of the most important sporting events in the U.S., it’s also one of the most celebrated pageantries—with attendees, including celebrities, dressed in their finest and sipping mint juleps. If I have a little more time than two minutes, I’ll soak in some of the pageantry that will take place throughout the weekend because NBC has a full schedule of Derby-related coverage, including undercard races and red carpet specials.
And there’s more. We even created a separate FiOS on-demand folder of videos of the biggest horse races—last year’sDerby, Belmont Stakes and Preakness as well as this year’s Santa Anita Derby, Ashland Stakes, and Wood Memorial. You can find them all by clicking the On Demand button of your FiOS remote and choosing Free, then Sports, then NBC Sports, then Horse Racing.
For those who couldn’t make the trip to Louisville, don’t worry, Derby Watch Parties are growing year over year. In the sports world, some athletes get another chance to win the Super Bowl or World Series but theDerby offers no second chances for this group. Thoroughbreds are only 3-year-olds once and this Saturday they will race for a mile-and-a-quarter with the hopes of winning and having their name memorialized on the paddock walls of Churchill Downs.
Some of the best thoroughbreds in the nation will “Run for the Roses” and if you are a lover of horses, you won’t miss it. And in keeping with this weekend’s theme of horses, why not catch this weekend’s showing of the Steven Speilberg epic film “War Horse,” which is available for rent or purchase on FiOS TV’s Flex View.
For our on-demand fans who may not be watching theDerbyor “War Horse” check out the FiOS Family weekend sale. It offers three recent kid-friendly new releases on demand and on Flex View at up to half off. This weekend’s movies are “Fireman Sam: Rescue on the Water,” “We Bought a Zoo,” and “Alvin& the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.”
And for our faithful on-demand fans, you know when the weekend begins tonight so does FiOS Movie Night, which of course means $2.99 movie rentals. Tonight’s movies are “War Horse,” the Adam Sandler comedy “Jack and Jill” and Martin Scorcese’s Oscar-winning “Hugo.”
Enjoy the weekend. There’s certainly plenty to enjoy.
