Editor's Note: As we mentioned last week, we've asked a couple of our partners who are helping us raise the IQ of our customers' homes to share their perspective on our new smart home service. The blog below was written by Leon Hounshell, division general manager of managed home solutions for Motorola Mobility. Over the years, Leon has established himsel as a thought leader in the home automation space, and we're glad to welcome him to the At Home blog.
By now, you've heard about Verizon Home Monitoring and Control—the new way to turn your house into a smart home.
We Motorolans have been working with Verizon to make sure that your camera feeds are secure, that you can reliably control your lights from your smartphone, and that signing up for the service is quick and easy. In other words, together with Verizon, we've made sure that it all works.
But a lot of time goes into things you don't see, because part of making the smart home truly smart is making it simple as well. This means concealing a lot of the innate complexity that you get when you take several devices in each home and multiply that across millions of homes and multiple services. That's a lot of different combinations. Our goal is to customize your experience for your devices and your situation, and have our software do the work—not you.
For example: when you sign up for the Energy Control service kit, you get a handful of great devices to start. You can also tack on additional sensors, appliance modules, energy readers, etc. The challenge is that these devices work on different protocols, have different functions and operate on different software. Normally, this would require multi-step installations, pairing processes and network setup procedures. You have better things to do.
The device recognition and installation components are built into our software, so that all you have to do is plug it in and turn it on—and invite us to your Thanksgiving celebration. Want to set your thermostat to energy sipping levels? Click of a button. It’s that easy.
This is just one way that we've been making the smart home, simple.
