More FiOS TV Sports with the Yankees and Big Ten Sports

Yankees on YES.JPGAs both a Penn State grad and a Yankees fan, I’m thrilled with a couple of new sports upgrades on FiOS.  Verizon broadband and FiOS TV customers will soon have more ways to watch the New York Yankees or Big Ten college athletics.

We’re teaming up with the Yes Network to make live Yankees games available online.  You’re eligible to buy access to the online games if you’re a Verizon Internet customer who subscribes to FiOS TV and also receives the YES Network in-market programming as part of your TV package.  That means you live in the metro New York City region, upstate New York and portions of New Jersey.

We’ll offer two packages: all the YES Yankees games throughout the remainder of the 2009 regular season for $29.95; or a 30-day schedule between now and the remainder of the regular season for $19.95.  The online games will be broadcast in HD, and subscribers will be able to watch them at any of the Verizon Wi-Fi hotspots that we turned up recently within the YES in-market footprint.  If you qualify, you can subscribe to the online games at Yankees.com, YES Network.com and Verizon.net, where you’ll find more information.

Just as good you can now watch more Penn State and other Big Ten sports on four overflow channels that we’re adding for the Big Ten Network.  Overflow channels function like safety values.  When several games are being played simultaneously, we can carry up to five of them at the same time, so fans don’t need to miss their big games.  Don’t want anyone to be stuck watching Michigan or Ohio State…

So, on Sept. 5, when Akron plays Penn State at noon, the Big Ten Network will carry the game on FiOS TV channel 85 in standard definition and 585 in high definition.  At the same time, fans can catch the following additional games in standard definition on the overflow channels, 330-333:

·    Montana State at Michigan State

·    Towson at Northwestern

·    Northern Iowa at Iowa

·    Toledo at Purdue.

We’re turning up the Big Ten overflow channels throughout our FiOS TV markets, but they won’t actually carry games until the start of the Big Ten’s football season.

Whether you’re a Yankees or Big Ten fan – or both – we’re giving our customers access to more of the programming they like.
