Residential Long Distance Call Charges to Haiti Waived

by Employee ‎01-20-2010 02:03 PM - edited ‎01-20-2010 04:19 PM

haiti.JPGThe images and stories from Haiti since the 7.0 earthquake shook the island nation to its core are gut wrenching.  Thousands of people were killed or injured, entire villages wiped out and countless buildings flattened, leaving millions of people in need of life's basic necessities.

Although many relief agencies from several countries are on the ground in Haiti, the crumbled roads and lack of a normal infrastructure has made it very challenging to deliver bare essentials to victims.

While Haitians are hurting, I believe their family and friends in the U.S. are suffering too because they can not, or haven't been able to, speak to their loved ones.

Starting today, Verizon will waive charges for all residential landline calls from the U.S. to Haiti going back to Jan. 12 through Jan. 31.  Verizon Wireless also will waive fees for all long distance calls placed to Haiti from the U.S. during this period.

As a national communications provider, Verizon's customers come from all walks of life and corners of the world, including Haiti.  In helping support the ongoing relief efforts that continue in Haiti, we hope this initiative helps bring peace of mind to our customers by connecting them with loved ones.

Very soon after the earthquake occurred, Verizon Wireless went into action and worked with the American Red Cross to allow customers to donate $10 via a simple text message.  To date, Verizon Wireless customers have pledged more than $6 million to the American Red Cross through texting.  In addition, Verizon and its employees have pledge more than $600,000 in donations to support earthquake relief efforts in Haiti and we awarded $100,000 in grants to World Vision and Food for the Poor to assist the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

I'm an active duty spouse with the member deployed to Haiti.  Thank you Verizon for the twenty days of phone service for our men and women that are helping with the crisis.  However, 20 days is a very small amount of days compared to the crisis at hand.

Our military men and women have just arrived and their mission is just starting.  As a spouse I would like to ask Verizon to consider extending your offer to our military troops.   I heard from troop members with AT&T service are getting their calls back home -FREE.    We have always been a loyal customer of Verizon and hope that you will extend your offer.   It is peace of mind for all the spouses of loved ones that are deployed.

At $2.89 a minute will be have to use a lot of our paycheck to pay the phone bill.

Please help!
