For some reason I’ve felt a bit nostalgic lately, so this week’s blog is not so much about how technology is moving us forward, but rather how it can also reacquaint us with things from the past.
Take Snail Mail My Email, for instance. Email, instant messaging, Facebook and the like have all contributed to the demise of the hand-written letter. While it’s great to communicate quickly and easily, something is lost along the way. The thought, effort and craftsmanship of a handwritten note deliver a different emotional experience than our often soulless e-communications. San Francisco-based designer Ivan Cash founded Snail Mail My Email to bring some old-fashioned hand-written letter joy back into our lives. People send emails to Cash’s team, who then turns them into hand-written works of art, which are mailed to the intended recipients. The most popular type of letter? You guessed it – love notes. Have you written any letters lately?
Then there’s The New Yorker magazine which you can now subscribe to on the iPad. While most e-reader magazines have fancy interactive bells and whistles, The New Yorker has opted for a clean, readable format. Since subscriptions became available on the iPad this spring, some 95,000 people have signed up for the publication … evidently to simply read it. These subscription figures are the highest of any iPad edition sold by Conde Nast, which also publishes Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair, Glamour and others on the iPad. Just goes to show, sometimes compelling content in a simple format is all you need.
If you were a fan of the TV show Saved by the Bell back in the day, you can now walk down that memory lane with a new interactive online video game on YouTube. I was skeptical of this at first, but the little animated characters are amusing, and the power to move the storyline in numerous directions becomes a bit addictive and fun. Not the worst way in the world to waste a little time this weekend.
Have a great weekend, everyone!
