Have you rented a video-on-demand title or watched a TV show on Netflix within the past week? Could your experience have been better? These questions kicked off yesterday’s panel discussion: “Winning the Click: Using Technology to Mix a Better On-Demand Cocktail,” at the On Demand Summit 3.0, presented by B&C/Multichannel News in New York City.
Most of the audience answered yes to the questions, prompting a lively discussion among executives from Rovi, Cox Communications, Viamedia iN Demand and Verizon’s Tricia Lynch, senior programming executive for FiOS video-on-demand.
They talked about how companies like Verizon can make the on-demand experience better for consumers. Todd Spangler of Multichannel News served as the moderator and asked what the number one issue is for consumers when it comes to video-on-demand. The panel agreed it’s finding the content. With the growing size of on-demand libraries, it’s hard for customers to search, discover and keep up with new content.
Consumers want their TV experience to be easy and the technology behind it simple to use; and they also want the ability to watch content on any device. Tricia pointed to the success of Verizon’s recently introduced Flex View service, which lets FiOS customers buy or rent movies and watch it on multiple devices, anytime, anywhere. Tricia said it’s about providing customers with borderless access to everything they love.
Tricia said Verizon is making it easier for customers to find content with FiOS TV’s Recommendations for You and More Like This features. When customers launch the video-on-demand library, they can click on recommended titles or look at titles similar to ones they have recently rented to discover new content.
A new feature coming with our latest guide update lets FiOS TV customers search live TV, DVR recordings and on-demand content with one query. With this update, customers can click on the ‘B’ button on the remote control, enter a keyword and instantly search for all the available content.
The panel discussion covered a lot of ground, so we decided to catch up with Tricia afterward to see what additional thoughts she had about the on-demand industry, the challenges facing consumers every day and what customers can expect with FiOS. You can watch the video here.
