Sunday is Earth Day.
We occasionally talk green on this blog, but we try to make every day Earth Day at Verizon. That may sound corny and marketing-ish, but hear me out.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve seen an incredible focus on reducing energy and a deep interest on the lifecycle of products – from when, say, an Internet router is being designed and what components and minerals are used to make it, all the way through to the manufacturer’s assembly line, to the box or packaging used to deliver it to your home. Our team is now following that router all the way until the day it stops working and is returned to Verizon, where it is dealt with in an environmentally-sound manner. By the way, we have a zero landfill policy, but more on that some other day.
And as we’ve introduced FiOS TV in various markets over the last six (yes, it’s been that long), it’s been interesting to see the evolution of our service, the competition we’ve introduced, and how our services is becoming greener--for lack of a better term.
The first and larger infographic (directly below) captures that evolution and illustrates some major milestones. For example, last year Verizon became an ENERGY STAR certified provider of set top boxes. And back in 2010, we introduced more energy-efficient set top boxes that use 30% less energy than previous models.
This is just one example of how we’re delivering not just better TV, but it’s also how we’re delivering it smarter and more energy efficiently.

Happy Earth Day!
