Luckily, shopping online has changed everything. Amazon, Overstock.com, Ebay, you name it, online shopping sites have eliminated the need to witness the holiday horrors of the crowded shopping mall.
If, like many Americans, you're starting your holiday shopping on Cyber Monday, have a great time but remember, just as there are pickpockets at the mall, there are some evil folks waiting for you on line too. They're out to steal your identity, your credit card information and your holiday cheer.
So here are a few tips from my friends at Verizon Online for a safe online shopping experience:
- Maximize your router security with WEP, WPA or WPA2 protection (all supported by Veizon routers).
- Be careful about your online checkout stand. If the site doesn't have "https" in the address when it comes time to pay, don't order!
- Get a rock solid Internet security package. I've used the Verizon Internet Security Suite (VISS) for years now and really like it. In addition to firewall, anti-virus, pop-up blocker and more, it helps keep online shopping safe with:
- Fraud Protection: alerts you to potentially bogus Web site
- Privacy Manager: gives you control over how much information Web sites record about your browsing
- Wi-Fi Security: helps ensure your PC will not be discoverable by others when you are connected to public hotspots
- Be wary of opening e-mails with attachments that come from unknown sources. They can contain viruses, spyware, worms, etc.
- If you suspect your identity or data has been stolen, you should familiarize yourself with these steps for recourse
