When it comes to breaking down old technology boundaries to simplify and enrich our lives, Verizon is leading the charge. If you’ve followed us, you know how we’ve advanced the integration of entertainment and communication, work and play, at home and away.
From our FiOS TV Xbox Live app and Home Monitoring & Control service to our MY FiOS Mobile app, we’re putting technology in people’s hands, freeing them to access everything they need – any time, any place and on many of their favorite devices.
Today, we are at it again, announcing a new joint venture with Redbox, the leader in DVD and Blu-ray movie rentals in the US. Together, we’ll be introducing a new choice for a disc-to-digital video entertainment. This nationwide subscription video service will combine the convenience of Redbox’s physical media rental with high-quality, streaming video-on-demand content from Verizon.
The service will be easy-to-use, flexible, affordable and will enable all consumers across the U.S. to enjoy the new and popular entertainment they want, whenever they choose, using the media and devices they prefer.
We believe this is the right kind of new entertainment service, delivered at just the right time. The industry research firm IDC notes that while video rental revenue continues to grow, online and video-on-demand are driving growth and accounting for a greater share of the market – projected to grow from nearly 170 million U.S. Internet video users in 2011 to more than 200 million users by 2015.
Some subscription TV service providers view these trends as disruptive challenges. We view them as opportunities for leadership and a wider array of convenient entertainment choices for consumers. It is our first national video offering and reflects our ongoing commitment to empower people to enjoy entertainment on their terms.
We’ll be announcing more details about the new service in the coming months as we get closer to a commercial offering in the second half of 2012. So stay tuned!
