Verizon's Jack McArtney answers some questions about Internet Safety Month

by Employee ‎06-13-2012 12:53 PM - edited ‎06-13-2012 12:53 PM

Jack McArtney.jpgToday we're blogging about Juneas National Internet Safety Month with Verizon's Jack McArtney, director-Corporate and Community Responsibility, fielding a couple of questions about online safety.  Jack's team is focused on promoting Internet safety for our customers, partners and employees.

Verizon will host an Internet safety webinar beginning at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, June 14, featuring Kelly Mendoza of Common Sense Media, who will provide parents with tips on how to protect the safety of their kids and families when they are online.  To reserve a spot for the webinar, click here.

Q:  Why is online safety important to Verizon?

As responsible corporate citizens, we want to share our success with our community to make the world in which we work better than it was yesterday. Promoting online safety plays an integral role in helping customers trust the services that we offer.

We take our responsibility for online safety very seriously. That’s why we help prepare our customers for the positive ways technology can be used, as well as how to deal with the challenges that can result from its misuse.

Smartphones, laptops, tablets, Xboxes and Playstations … with so much technology integrated into our lives, families today have to deal with issues and challenges that our grandparents couldn't imagine. Fortunately, we have programs and safeguards in place for customers to help create the digital experience that is right for them.

Q:  What is Verizon doing to make the Internet safe for its customers?Parental Controls Center.png

We provide educational resources from global experts to prepare customers for integrating technology into their family’s life. We also provide first-rate parental control tools for wireless, TV and online platforms to give families more control over managing their digital experience. From education to tools to policies, our goal is to empower customers to use our technology safely and responsibly.

We’re also supporting numerous online safety industry initiatives this year. For example:

  • Verizon is supporting the CTIA and Electronic Software Ratings Board mobile app rating initiative. These easy-to-use ratings are set to launch later this year, and will help by providing parents with consistent ratings for mobile applications.
  • We plan to collaborate with the Family Online Safety Institute and others later this year to launch “Platform for Good” – a site that will let parents and kids express good digital citizenship, share experiences, provide advice and connect.
  • Finally we use our technology to increase awareness of online safety challenges through 3-screen Public Service Announcements that run across FiOS TV, Verizon.net and the Verizon Mobile Web. This June, in support of Internet Safety Month, we are running Verizon Foundation partner Common Sense Media’s “Been There” public service announcement campaign, which encourages parents to talk to their teens about cell phone use.
